This Christmas Comes

Here’s another entry from my latest work entitled, “I Write On Anything (Written on a Napkin)“. This is also available as an eBook.

Today is my 7th day in Peru. The last time I was here, my friend George had just died and I’m afraid I’m always going to equate Peru with George dying.

This is a poem I wrote in late 2009 thinking of the difficult time George’s mom must be going through having lost her husband and her oldest child within a very short time. It is also a tune:

And anything that you deserve is more than you desire
A life of peace was suddenly thrown deep into the fire

Well don’t you know you never know and no one knows this more than you
It’s all turned upside down and now it’s time to start anew

I imagine that the pain you feel is just unreal
But somehow you have made it through these days unhealed

The ghosts of those we love won’t leave us unattended
Their voices sprinkle love and guidance even after we’ve mended

This Christmas comes
Here’s to our loved ones
Our loved one
